British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
