Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
